Faucet/Taps Styles That Can Withstand Cold Weather
The winter is on the edge and everything, from your bathroom faucets to kitchen faucets can take a toll on the water pressure due to the weather. There is always the precaution but there are faucets and added layers in it that are made solely for the freezing winter and its effects.
In this article, we will cover the type of faucets and mandatory things needed for bathroom faucets.
Wall Mount Faucets
The major benefit of wall-mounted faucets is their placement. It is installed on the exterior of the walls but placed higher on the walls. This is such a benefit for freezing temperatures it reduces the exposure to it. The other kitchen faucets or other kinds without wall mount faucets type in general might not be able to position in such ways which leads to the faucet being cold. Since it is about wall mount faucets, we must know that they are not affected by the cold ground of winter. Other sink faucets that are not wall-mount faucets, it is generally colder.
It is a practical solution and a few recommendations for wall mount faucets are here:
● Esqr- Single lever wall mixer with telephonic arrangement
● eddy-Bib cock with aerator and wall flange
Pvd Coated Faucets
Winter might come as a challenge to durability and cause corrosion and other damage to sink faucets as well as bathroom faucets. However, to prevent this it is important to get PVD coated faucets. PVD coating creates a tough layer that is scratch-resistant and reluctant to be damaged in harsh winter. When the water freezes there is always a way for rust and corrosion leading to thaws. Thaw might sound normal in the beginning but it can be repeated leading to damaged faucets, especially in the outside faucets.
A few practical recommendations for the types of PVD-coated faucets:
French Gold
Rose gold
Sparkle black
EDEN Faucets
Eden faucets are very efficient types of faucets that have a very smooth water flow even in a harsh winter. The materials used in EDEN faucets are resistant to rust and corrosion, which can be exacerbated by the moisture and freezing conditions of winter, ensuring everything from your kitchen faucets to your bathroom faucets stays in top condition. EDEN faucets can have multiple types and shapes according to the needs of people or places in the house.
A few recommendations for EDEN faucets are these:
● Bib cock with aerator and wall flange
● Wall mixer with inbuilt telephonic arrangement, shower arrangement, and wall flange
● Sink mixer — wall mounted with full motion spout and aerator
● Sink cock — wall mounted with full motion spout and aerator
EARC Faucets
With advanced designs and technology, now the weather is not the one that decides the shape and designs of the faucets anymore, rather the design could be as good and sleek as EARC faucets and sink faucets. constructed from high-quality materials such as stainless steel or brass, EARC faucets are resistant to corrosion, and rust, and they can sustain equally as EDEN faucets under moisture, ensuring long-term durability. The very involvement of PVD coating makes it better for the life span of the outer coating.
A few recommendations for EARC faucets are these:
● Pillar cock with aerator
● Single lever wall mixer with telephonic arrangement
● Pillar cock with aerator, total height of 300mm
Thermostat Faucets
The thermostat is better than a geyser in multiple aspects sink faucets or faucets in general. Thermostat faucets can save water in the best possible way. Few areas deal with extreme cold and is freezing most of the time in the year. The thermostat is the ideal way to not let the pipes get too cold and temperature fluctuation affects it much. Because thermostat faucets are engineered to handle temperature variations efficiently, they can be a more reliable option in the winter, reducing wear on your plumbing system and extending the life of your faucet. Your faucets can live up to the maximum duration due to the thermostat. It is the new change for all seasons, from summer to winter.
A few recommendations for thermostat regulators:
● Concealed bath & shower mixer with thermostat control cartridge square
● 5-way diverter
Conclusion
In short, all the features we’ve discussed — like frost-resistant designs, durable materials, and consistent temperature control — are key to extending the lifespan of your faucets, especially during winter. The right faucet style ensures reliable performance and protects your plumbing from the cold. At Essel Bath, we offer a wide range of faucets with these essential qualities, combining style, durability, and functionality. Choose the right bath fittings and faucets that keep your home safe, stylish, and worry-free all year round.

the ducks!! can we please hear more about jim and their duck collection?
(yes, yes you can!)
"And for you, Jim," Dolly set a little box into their hands.
Holiday gifts at the Boodharis were pleasantly simple. All three kids put money toward one big gift for Dolly (a new stand mixer this year which she'd been thrilled about, especially the cheery orange color) and Dolly would give out small thoughtful ones in return. The two grandchildren would get a few things, but there was a price limit. ("There's only so much room in the apartment!" Zuri would remind everyone each year.)
Oluwande had gotten a subscription to Make magazine which made his birthday gift easy this year. Jim already mentally bookmarked an intro to welding kit he'd like. Zuri had put in her new earrings right away and Ada was showing the kids how the bee-themed tea steeper would work.
In short, no one was looking at Jim and they got to open the box observed only by Dolly.
"Thank you," they said as they peeled off the tape.
"I found them when I was hunting around a mineral table for Oluwande," Dolly told them.
From tissue paper, Jim pulled a carved bit of amethyst just a little bigger than their thumb nail. The purple duck caught the light. Then two others even smaller in pink quartz. The little family setteled into Jim's palm.
"Oh," Jim lifted them to their eyes. "They're really detailed."
"Amazing what people can do, isn't it?"
"Thanks," they said again with more feeling. "They're great."
Stuffed full of food, ducks tucked carefully in their pocket and the lingering smell of baby powder and rosewater hugs on their clothes, Jim and Oluwande got on the subway. Oluwande was holding his magazine and bag full of leftovers.
"What'd Mom get you?" He asked.
"I'll show you when we get home. You like the magazine?"
"It's great," he nodded. "Wonder how she even found out about it? I'm going to give them to Pete after I'm done reading them, he'll love all the LED circuitry stuff. I know he wants to make that dress of Frenchie's programmable for light effects."
"Wonder if we could do something for the chainsaw."
"Roach would fucking love that. Good idea."
The apartment was well-warmed when they got in, taking the chill of the afternoon off them easily. After Oluwande slotted the leftovers into the fridge, Jim took the ducks out of their pocket and approached the little shelves.
They were only half full. Jim was picky about what they added and despite Ada's dire warnings, there hadn't yet been a gifting cascade. The salt and pepper shakers, along with the sugar bowl, sat on the kitchen table, too useful to get relegated to display.
Some of their favorites were on the top shelf, the most visible. There was the duck sitting on a comically large egg with a gobsmacked expression, the obsidian one with it's wings outstretched, one painted like a traditional china pattern with it's beak dipped in gold and one duckling carrying an umbrella.
There were only ten or eleven others, but Jim spent a few minutes carefully rearranging and then setting down the new acquisitions next to the obsideon one. They looked like they belonged together.
"Oh cool," Oluwande put a hand to their back, so he could lean in and look. "You like 'em?"
"Yes," Jim tapped the amethyst one gently. "Never seen one like it."
"Yeah, it's good when they're all unique."
"I got you something," they announced.
"Oh, I mean, you already got me the new shoes, I thought that was my gift."
"Those were for Teal. This is for you."
"You know I am Teal, right?" Oluwande laughed. "You don't have to do both of us."
"I wanted to."
They slipped out of his reach and went into the bedroom. They didn't really have to hide gifts from Oluwande, he was a weirdo who didn't go looking for them. They knew he'd taken to keeping their gifts at other people's houses which was annoyingly smart.
This was just an envelope anyway. They handed it to him without ceremony.
"Gift card?" he teased, opening it. They waited as he teased out the contents. "....Jim."
"Yeah?"
"How?"
"We can afford it," Jim shrugged. "I did the math, set aside tips for a bit.
"Longer than a bit."
"You said you wanted to go."
"I did. I do! This is awesome, really. How long?"
"A week. I already told Stede we were going, he's cool with it."
"Singapore...holy shit, we'll need hotels."
"Done."
"Done?" He blinked at them, then dug into the envelope and pulled out the itinerary that they'd carefully put together.
"You plan all our trips. I figured it was my turn."
"Day trips! This is massive. Holy shit!" He put the paper down and then drew them into a hug. They hugged him back smiling over hsi shoulder. "This is so cool! I haven't left the country in...forever and that wasn't far. This is going to be a real adventure."
"It's all real." They kissed his neck. "But yeah, it'll be a big one."
They were ready for that again. Oluwande made them want to take on the world.

This is the most phenomenal dining room & kitchen I’ve ever seen. Look at the antique dark green table against the black walls. Carefully chosen art is illuminated by vintage-look lights.
Positioned in front of the kitchen wall, are 2 comfy worn leather side chairs. What a classy way to wait for dinner.
And, on the other side of the chair wall, is this gorgeous kitchen, with a glass wall to see into the dining room.
Is this not fabulous? I love the color scheme of gray Shaker cabinets, ochre walls, and a creamy ceiling. Plus, the open shelving and brass rods hold such perfect accessories.
The stove looks like it has a digital touch screen.
The sink is a stylized farm sink and can you see the glass? It’s wavy- just like old glass. Fabulous.
I do love the gold taps, but again, they don’t have a mixer. A kitchen like this, w/the Shaker style cabinetry will set you back $20,000 - $40,000.

Welcome to the DADWC! Here is a prompt for you! Restaurant AU, with the characters of your choice!
Thank you so much for the prompt! I hope the drabble is to your liking.
Word Count: 1655
Pairing: Cullen/Bull
For @dadrunkwriting
Going to restaurants was an added benefit of being friends with Vivienne. Madame De Fer’s Critiques was the formal review column that she ran, seemingly dictating the future of upper echelon restaurants. This was not one of those restaurants. A greasy hole-in-the-wall bar and grille had been Bull’s desired stop of the night. She had dragged her friend around all day from place to place all weekend. Now out of reviewable restaurants, Bull had desired food with fat and grease and everything else bad for you.
“Couldn’t have picked a place a little cleaner?” she asked, her nose turning up as she sat down at the bar with Bull.
The place was smoky with dark lighting, harsh yellow incandescent lamps hung from the ceiling and came out of the wall at each booth. The ones at the booths had a dirty stained glass look to them, mixes of the deep yellow with rich reds and blues. The cushions were worn red leather. Booze wafted around them, mixing in with the scents of mouth-watering food.
A gleeful smile crossed Bull’s face as he shook his head, “Absolutely not. You dressed me up for your fancy shit, now we get to eat where I like, Ma’am.”
Vivienne tutted, “I’m a fine dining connoisseur. This bar food won’t impress me unless it tastes like gold.”
“I hope not,” Bull told her, “I think gold food would taste pretty shitty.” Vivienne groaned.
From behind the bar, a curly-haired blond man approached, shaking a martini mixer vigorously. That certainly caught Bull’s eye. Firm fingers held the silver cups, curling at the tips to keep the glass in place. A wry smirk came over Bull’s lips as the man’s rhythm slowed before he poured the drinks before carefully sliding them to another couple of patrons. A tired, but gentle smile was turned his and Vivienne's way, reaching beneath the bar and pulling out two menus, placing them before the duo. “Welcome to Herald’s Rest,” he said, “My name’s Cullen--”
“Bull,” he interrupted with a wink.
Cullen seemed taken aback, no doubt trying to figure out if that was deliberate or a blink, but did his best customer service smile. Bull avoided cringing. Okay that was the wrong move for this guy, then.
“Nice to meet you,” Cullen said before diving into the specials for the evening as well as the unique drafts they had that night.
Vivienne actually looked almost impressed at the selection, which was probably the best this place would get from her. Both of them ordered their meals in quick succession-- a whiskey bourbon burger for Bull and a salmon salad for Vivienne. She wasn’t sure she should trust the fish here, but Cullen assured her that they always bought their fish fresh every morning. The owner would allow nothing less than perfection when it came to quality.
“I will be the judge of that, dear,” Vivienne had told him.
And, to Bull’s surprise, she judged it quite well. Much to his delight, he watched her sneak out her phone, quickly tapping away some notes in the folder that held her restaurant reviews. As Cullen made his way back over to check on them, she quickly slid it back into her purse. Her shoulders rolled back into a confident smile while Bull leaned forward on the bar.
“I hope everything is to your liking,” he said, taking away Bull’s empty glass, “And you’d like a refill?”
“Please,” replied Bull. Cullen quickly got to work mixing a cocktail for Bull. Normally, he went for straight liquor, but oh what those hands could do.
Vivienne told him that everything most certainly was. They chatted pleasantly while Bull watched, silent and studying. Their bartender was certainly well-kpet-- firm stubbled chin, a lip scar that seemed to enhance his face rather than detract, perfectly curled and styled hair, even his shirt-- a black tee that had ‘Herald’s Rest’ emblazoned on it in bold letters-- was fitted to perfection. Eventually, of course, a crack had to show. As Cullen finished pouring the drinks, he set down the shaker to clasp his fingers. To the naked eye he might have just been trying to crack his knuckles, but Bull could see that they were shaking.
“You alright, man?” he asked, with a mark of genuine concern in his voice.
A real smile crossed Cullen’s face this time as he nodded, “Yes, my apologies, I’ll have your drinks in a moment….” True to his word, Cullen was able to give them their drinks, though Bull watched as the man kept his eyes trained on his fingers, as if waiting for them to betray him. Thankfully, they lasted long enough to deliver them safely. He nodded, “Let me or Sera know if you need anything else.”
At hearing her name, the other bartender, a blond elven woman with hand-cropped hair, looked up. Cullen gave her a nod which she nodded back to before moving to handle her customers again. Bull turned to make sure his good eye watched Cullen slip into the kitchen. A small frown took over his face-- Vivienne would say he was pouting, but he didn’t pout.
Though, instead, finishing her meal, Vivienne slipped out of her chair, “Unfortunately, I need to use the powder room.”
“Have fun with that,” snickered Bull, casting her a wry glance before turning his attention back toward the door.
He stayed like that for a while before he heard someone huff. He turned to see the elven woman--Sera-- looking at him, grabbing some empty dishes and glasses from the couple next to Bull and Vivienne who had just left. Instead of speaking, he just shrugged at her.
“Don’t worry ‘bout ‘im,” she said, “Takes a bit ‘fore he can come back. Shakes and all.”
“He okay?” asked Bull.
“I jus’ said don’ worry ‘bout ‘im, right?” she told him, “Yeesh.”
True to her word, Cullen did reappear just as Sera said no more than five minutes later. Vivienne still hadn’t come back from the bathroom, which was concerning. He hoped that fish had been up to quality despite how the bar looked. Bull watched Cullen flex his hand, leaning against the wall as he looked nervously at the bar. Bull slipped out of his seat, taking Vivienne’s purse with him. Mainly, because she’d kill him if he didn’t.
“You gonna be okay?” he asked.
Cullen looked up at him like a deer in headlights, his fist curling up protectively. That was good-- the man had fighting instincts from somewhere. Layers laid beneath that pretty face. It wasn’t unusual for Bull to flirt with a bartender, but Cullen had been a fun puzzle to figure out and Bull wasn’t quite done. No… He might need a few more visits before he had completed it.
“Yes,” he replied, sighing, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to leave you unattended.”
“You’re good,” Bull rumbled, “Ma’am’s at the bathroom anyway.”
“...You call her Ma’am?” he asked, head tilting as though he were a young Mabari and not a full grown man. Bull couldn’t help but stare openly, a smile echoing on his face.
“Friend of me,” he clarified, “She hates Viv and Vivienne is too long to say.”
Cullen actually let out a soft chuckle, “Ah, I see. Well, I hope she finds our restrooms to her liking as well. Not every day a critic walks into our bar.”
Now that had caught Bull’s attention. Vivienne made extra precautions to make sure no one discovered that there was a food critic in her midsts at any restaurant. It came with the territory of getting an honest review. Yet, her Cullen had stated her profession like it was plain as day. Bull crossed his arms.
“You figure that out on your own?” he asked.
Cullen shook his head, “No… Someone like her doesn’t normally walk into The Rest for… obvious reasons. I mentioned it to our assistant manager, Leliana. She’s the one who said she was, uh, oh… that Orlesian blog I can never remember the name of. Madame something. Made sure to treat her as anyone else. Leliana believes special treatment gets you caught once you know.” He chuckled nervous, reaching up a hand to rub the back of his neck, “I.. should get back to work.”
“Let me do the honor of escorting you,” Bull said, motioning toward the step toward the bar. That little jibe managed to get Cullen to snort a little before hurrying over back behind the bar with a quick, yet confidant gate. That was a military man’s walk. Just who was this bartender?
Bull followed, taking his seat again and resting down Vivienne’s pocket book. Behind him he heard her starting to walk up.
“Of course!” a woman with a thick Antivan accent said, “We’d love to be featured! I can get an interview with our owner, of course. I’ll call Ms. Cadash right away.” Bull and Cullen shared a knowing glance, but pretending as if Cullen was simply cleaning a glass from the dryer.
Vivienne took her seat, smiling at Cullen, “Feeling better?”
“Yes,” he said, “Thank you. Refill?” Vivienne nodded.
“A new drink, please. Fanciest you have, dear, for me and my friend,” she ordered, “I’m not sure what it will be, but surprise me. I don’t get to find such diamonds in the roughs, often.”
“Because you never go to them,” laughed Bull.
Cullen quickly got to work going through what they had until he actually managed to find a nice bottle of champagne which Vivienne said would do nicely. Vivienne toasted Bull for his find, though she admitted she was not going to be kind about the décor. Still, no matter how a place looked, good food would always be good food.
They made sure to tip Cullen handsomely. And, if he found a slip of paper with a string of digits on them, well… Bull would leave it up to him to call.

Mocha Bread - bread making at home during covid
It’s been a while since I updated this blog. Well life’s been busy, when one has to be an adult... Last time I was here (June 2015?!), I just gave notice for my old job, and went back to school to complete my master’s degree in communications. A year later, I took on an events and engagement position at the largest charity foundation in Hong Kong. Another four years, despite the terrible hours and amount of (really meaningful) work, I am still with the company (with 2 promotions!), and I am glad to still be offered a new contract in times like these.
Yes, the coronavirus... In Hong Kong, I’ve been working from home right after the Chinese New Year holiday. Luckily for us, after a short period of madness where people were hoarding TP and rice, things have *kinda* gone back to ‘normal’. It’s been a rather surreal two months (and ongoing) of work-from-home experience, but that also means I actually have the time to start playing with recipes again!
Bread is not something I am very confident with, mainly because Hong Kong is rather hot and wet climate-wise. I always had trouble getting doughs to properly rise in “room” temperature. Three years ago, I actually purchased a mini oven with a dough fermentation mode, so that should solve the problem? Since I have plenty of time, I could even make bread in a leisurely manner. (Funny though, after all these years, I still have not caved in to get myself an electric mixer, because I really have no space for that. Someday my friends, someday...)
Well, the bread recipe today in fact is not my first stay-at-home experiment. I started off with a yeastless recipe, Irish Soda Bread, just in time for St Patrick’s Day, then I went on to do an overnight pizza dough from the Smitten Kitchen (because I’ve actually never tried fermenting dough in the fridge). So officially, this is my third bake, the Mocha Bread. Again, I did part of the fermentation in the fridge overnight to see what will happen (hey, I did say I am experimenting!)
Mocha Bread (Makes 2 large-ish loaves)
Ingredients:
375 g strong white flour
2 1/2 tsps instant dried yeast (I use Saf-instant Gold - it’s so much easier, no need to proof or dissolve, just throw it straight into the flour mixture)
55 g superfine caster sugar
1/4 tsp salt
20 g unsweetened cocoa powder
10 g instant coffee powder
70 g roughly chopped dark chocolate
50 g unsalted butter
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 tsp natural vanilla extract
90 g dark chocolate chips
185 mL warm water (around 40ºC)
Steps:
Chocolate mixture - melt chopped dark chocolate and butter in a bowl, either over a saucepan of simmering water (don’t let the base of the bowl touch the water!) or if you are lazy like me, you can do it in the microwave in short bursts of 30 seconds, stirring in between). When fully melted, add egg and vanilla into the mixture
The dough - combine flour, yeast, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, coffee powder, then add in the chocolate mixture. Use a large wooden spoon/spatula to combine the wet and dry ingredients, and mix until the coarse and sticky dough comes together. You can then start using your hands to knead the dough for another 5-10 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic - add extra flour if necessary (If using a mixer, use a dough hook, and set to lowest speed to mix for 1-2 minutes, then increase the speed to medium and knead for another 5-10 min until a smooth dough is formed).
Proofing - grease a large bowl and transfer the dough into it and ensure the oil lightly coats the whole dough. Cover in cling film and leave the dough in a draught-free place for 1-2 hours, or until the dough is doubled.
[Here I placed my dough into the oven and tried the fermentation mode, which kept the temperature at around 30-ish ºC - half an hour later, the dough rose quite a bit already, but to experiment, I left dough in the fridge and went to bed. The next morning I took the dough out and left it in room temperature until the afternoon to continue the rest of the proofing and it turned out quite ok! Generally speaking, if proofing in the fridge, remove the dough from the fridge about 3 hours before you plan to bake it, to give the dough enough time to reach back to room temperature,]
Shaping the dough - knock back the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface, and divide it in half. Flatten each half to around 1 cm thick and scatter chocolate chips onto it. Roll up the dough into logs and transfer them onto a greased baking tray. Use a knife to make three diagonal slashes across the top of each dough.
Second proofing - cover the doughs with a damp cloth and leave them for an hour in room temperature, or until they double in size.
Baking - preheat the over to 180ºC (350ºF). Bake the bread for 45-50 minutes. When done, it will sound a bit hollow when tapped. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
The bread turned out pretty well. Taste-wise it’s bittersweet though I wouldn’t mind a stronger coffee flavour, and it goes really well with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or as a snack in the afternoon. Since I live with my mum, with two people, the bread could last quite some time. It freezes pretty well too, so I suggest slicing them after cooling, wrap it up and leave one of them in the freezer until you are done with the first :)

Figure You Out: Chapter 1 - Shawn x African OC
A/N: I’ve had the idea for this fic for a while but it wasn’t until @vnv21 mentioned in a post a few months ago that she wanted to see Shawn and an African OC that I knew that I had to write it being African myself. It took a while to get to this point and I wanted to thank everyone who helped.@rulerofnocountry who came up with the name, @bugheadfanatic, @sean-mendezzzzz, @shawnssnack and @justbeingoceana who read through it and threatened to unfriend me if I didn’t write it, as well as @shawnsvalentine, @thotmendes and @shawnase for showing interest in it, and @tisvanessa (tagging her again 😂) for designing the mood board. I hope you enjoy it and feedback is very much appreciated.
PS: Music plays a huge role in the story as well as the writing process. As the fic goes on there are going to be songs used that aren’t very familiar so at the end of each chapter, I’ll link the song(s).
Word Count: 3.5k
Warnings: The N-word is alluded to in a song title, but it’s censored.

“T! Are you ready? We’re going to leave soon and you haven’t had anything to drink yet!” Tolani was still doing her makeup while her new housemates were in the common room pre-drinking. This was their first outing as a house and while she would have preferred to do something else, everyone wanted to go out, so she was putting the final touches on her makeup and spraying her hair with some braid sheen.
She looked in the mirror one final time before heading out of her room. Her gold highlighter paired with the gold shimmer on her lids made her skin glow. The addition of a dark matte lip made her look like an ethereal badass. While she never wore makeup that much, she had to admit that she looked damn good when she put in an effort.
“T!” she could hear one of her flatmates yell. Her name was Desire, the one person she’d spoken to the most, being the only other black girl in the dorm they’d formed a strong bond and it was nice to have someone that understood her at least a little bit.
‘Okay.’ she thought, ‘I can do this, I can go out there and socialise.’ As she walked down the corridor she could hear music in the kitchen, it sounded like an EDM track. ‘Not my choice of music, but it could be much worse.’ “Oh my gosh! You look stunning !” another one of her housemates named Nicole, exclaimed as she walked into the kitchen. Nicole was one of those girls that you misjudged when you first met her. She seemed obnoxious and stand-offish when they first met but Tolani later found out that Nicole was incredibly sweet. ‘A small girl with a big personality.’ “That outfit is perfect!” She was clearly a little tipsy, as Tolani was only wearing a black tank top, black skinny jeans under a black denim jacket and heeled boots. “We need to get you something to drink! What do you want? We have vodka, beer, tequila, gin and a whole lot of mixers.”
“Um, I-I’m not sure.” Tolani stuttered. While she knew what she liked and liked a drink every now and then, she didn’t want a situation where she found herself in an awkward position, given the fact that she didn’t know these people very well. Being in a dorm with 10 other people she didn’t know wasn’t her idea but that’s what university was all about, new experiences and while she was open to them, she wasn’t as open as everyone else seemed to be.
“I think I’ll just have a coke for now.”
“You sure?”
“Positive” Tolani replied with a tight smile.
Getting drunk after only being here a few days was not at the top of her list but she seemed to be the only one concerned about it. “You know, we don’t know much about you, other than the fact that your name isn’t actually T” Nicole turned to her. ‘Having people butcher my name isn’t fun’, she thought. Tolani hadn’t bothered telling people her full name seeing as Tolani Aderogba didn’t exactly roll off the tongue. All she’d told them was that it was a nickname when they asked her if her name was actually the letter T.
There seemed to be a friendly atmosphere, which was made friendlier by the large amounts of seemingly free-flowing alcohol. They’d moved in only in less than a week but she could already hear people drunkenly professing their love for each other. And while she knew they were all somewhat nervous to be in a confined space with people they didn’t know, she felt out of place. From what she could hear from snippets of conversation most people had grown up in and around Canada, there were people from Quebec, Vancouver and Toronto and from what she could tell, she was the only international student in her house and that made her feel like an outsider. ‘To be fair not everyone has moved in yet, maybe there will be more people like me.’
30 minutes of small talk and one rowdy uber ride later, they were in line to get into the club “Chin up you look miserable” Desire gently elbowed her in the ribs. “You definitely should have had something to drink.” “Well now I can be the designated sober friend” Tolani joked, Desire was the only person she would consider her friend at that moment. Hopefully, that would change. ‘Maybe I should loosen up and have a little fun.’ Tolani thought as they walked into the bar. ‘I can have something to drink, that doesn’t mean I’ll get drunk and lose control.’
The club wasn’t very crowded but it took a while to find a table large enough for all 6 of them.
Tolani ended up sandwiched between Desire and one of her other housemates Kyle. “So, T” he turned to her when they were seated with their drinks “Tell me about yourself, I feel like I’ve only seen you in passing and I’d like to get to know you.” He said as he shifted closer to hear her over the music. “Oh,” Tolani replied, taking a sip of her drink. Desire has ordered her a Smirnoff ice, not her drink of choice. “To start you off easy” she joked.
“Well as you know my name is T, well not really but that’s what everyone calls me.”
“You’re not Canadian, are you? Where are you from?” He interjected. ‘Wow. He’s enthusiastic.’ She thought
“I’m actually from-”
“Wait let me guess you’re from Africa. I say that cause your accent is different”
At that point, Tolani was prepared to shut down the conversation.
“I am from Africa.” She said with thinly veiled irritation. “But there are 54 countries. I’m actually from-”
“Have you seen a lion before?”
‘Oh for fuck's sake. I’m not drunk enough for this.’ “Before I answer your question, I need another drink.” she turned and looked at Desire hoping my her eyes signalled that she needed to leave. Luckily her friend got the message.
“What was that all about?” Desire shouted in an attempt to talk over the blaring music as they walked towards the bar. “He asked me if I’ve seen a lion.” Tolani scoffed with an eye roll. Desire couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe he’s nervous when he talks to pretty girls.” She winked. “Haha very funny. Either way, it would be nice to have a word in.”
“What would you like?” The bartender asked. “Can I get a double Hennessy and Coke please?” She responded politely.
“Straight for the Henny I see?”
“Well, if I’m going to listen to Kyle ask me if I’ve seen lions I might as well drink something really strong.”
By the time they were seated, Kyle was deep in conversation with Nicole about their childhoods growing up in Mississauga, while Desire was flirting with a guy who had walked up to the table. Feeling a little awkward Tolani started humming, along to the songs the DJ was playing. As soon as he changed songs she couldn’t help but smile and she started absentmindedly rapping along to ‘Good Life by Kanye West, one of her favourite songs. There was something about Kanye West telling you to throw your hands up in the sky that made her feel free.
“And she got the goods
and she got that ass I got to look, sorry.
Yo, it’s got to be, cause I’m seasoned, haters gimme them salty looks, lawrys.
50 told me go ‘head, switch the style up.
And if they hate, let ‘em hate and watch be money pile up.”
One by one, everyone at the table turned to her as she rapped along and vibed to the song flawlessly. Soon enough everyone joined in encouraging her. ‘This is what I needed.’ Tolani thought to herself as she continued singing, getting louder with each line.”I go for mine, I got to shine. Now throw your hands up in the sky.”
When the song ended, Desire leaned close “We’ve got to get you on the dance floor.” Desire chanted in her ear. Usually, Tolani would decline bu the alcohol combined with the excitement had her smiling and turning to Nicole. “Wanna dance?”
“Of course!” She nodded enthusiastically.
The three girls made their way to the dancefloor where the DJ was playing Juice by Lizzo, the definition of a feel-good pop anthem. After that, the DJ played some dancey in EDM tracks and while Tolani would usually roll her eyes at songs like this, she was tipsy enough that she could enjoy them.
Soon she heard the familiar synth beat of a song that made her yell in excitement. Ni**as in Paris was a song that never failed to get her excited, whether she was at home reading a book or in a club, her reaction was always the same. She knew all the lyrics and she made sure her friends knew it.
“She said, “‘Ye, can we get married at the mall?”
I said, “Look, you need to crawl 'fore you ball
Come and meet me in the bathroom stall
And show me why you deserve to have it all!” Everyone at the club was screaming the lyrics and Tolani could have sworn the floor was vibrating with the force of everyone jumping.
By the time the song ended, the 3 girls needed a break. “How about we get drinks.” Tolani proposed. As Nicole turned to answer her face morphed into an expression of shock. Soon after Desire’s face had the same expression. It took her a few seconds to realise that they weren’t looking at her but at something behind her. Before she could turn around she felt someone lightly tap her on the shoulder. Tolani proceeded to turn around and answer the person who had tapped her.
The first thing she noticed was his height. He was incredibly tall, easily 6 foot tall. Even though she wasn’t short at 5 foot 7, he still towered over her. As she tilted her head slightly to look at him the next thing she noticed were his eyes. While she couldn’t tell what colour they were, but even in the dim lighting, they seemed to sparkle. He was smiling down at her, his curls falling onto his face. That face, she could have sworn she’d seen him before but she couldn’t put her finger on it. One thing she couldn’t deny was that he was good looking.
“Hi.” His voice was light and silvery. It had an almost musical quality. She didn’t really think you could find people’s voices attractive but here she was.
“Umm hi there,” Tolani replied cautiously. She didn’t have a lot of experience with guys coming up to her and didn’t really know how to react.
“Feel free to tell me to leave, but what are you drinking? Can I get your next round?”
Before she could consider her answer her friends already answered with a resounding “Yes she does!” in perfect unison. Tolani whirled to look at them. A look of complete bewilderment on her face. She was surprised that her friends were so enthusiastic about this particular guy buying her a drink. She was definitely missing something.
“Umm… yeah, I guess you can?”
“You don’t sound sure. It’s okay if you feel a little uncomfortable. I can go.” he smiled politely.
“No, it’s fine.” She answered. “I just need to talk to my friends real quick.”
“I’ll wait at the bar.”
When she turned around her friends were looking around expectantly. “What?” She asked defensively. “You don’t know who that is, do you?” Nicole asked, a shocked look on her face.
“I’ll admit he looks really familiar but I’m not sure where I’ve seen him before.”
“That’s Shawn Mendes. He’s an incredibly famous singer. How do you not know who that is?”
“It’s probably because he isn’t very popular back home.”
“Oh yeah!” Desire exclaimed. “I forgot that you’re not from here.” While she meant well, phrases like that stung. It’s made her feel less than, like she didn’t belong here. And seeing as she didn’t know Desire and Nicole that well, she wasn’t sure how they really felt about her.
“What are some of his songs?”
“Where do I start?” Nicole rambled excitedly. “In my Blood, There’s Nothing Holding Me Back, Lost in Japan, Stitches-”
“He sang Stitches? I love that song.”
“Yeah him! Now go to the bar and go talk to him.”
SHAWN’S POV
Shawn saw being home from tour as a godsend. While he loved playing sold out arenas around the world, he also loved that he was able to relax and spend time with family and friends and be something that resembled “normal”. Hanging out with friends usually meant going for drinks and this night was no different.
Getting into the club was easy. Being a celebrity had its perks after all. Soon enough they were all seated and had ordered their drinks. When they all got together, it was like they never left. Trading stories about life, tour, girls. Anything and everything.
During a rare lull in the conversation, Shawn found himself scrolling through messages on his phone when his head snapped up as he recognised the song that the DJ was playing.
His love for Kanye was well documented. He’d said multiple times in multiple interviews that he listened to Kanye more than most artists. So hearing one of his favourite songs off his favourite Kanye album elevated his mood further.
He looked up and noticed that he wasn’t the only one enjoying the song. Across the room, he saw a girl rapping along to all the words and while he couldn’t hear her, he could see that she knew all the lyrics and was having a great time.
She had dark skin, the colour of umber and as cliché, as it sounded, she seemed to glow. Her braids moved as she swayed from side to side a huge smile on her face. Everyone around her watching and eventually joining in and soon enough the entire group singing along to the chorus.
As cliché as it sounded, he couldn’t stop watching her either. He wanted to go up to her but decided that it probably wasn’t in their best interest. When he was pictured talking to girls they fell subject to scrutiny from all angles. Mostly from his fans and it could get rough.
25 minutes later that all changed. Even though he was here to spend time with his friends, his eyes kept wandering to the other side of the club where she was one the dance floor with 2 of her friends. She moved with the ease and comfort of someone who danced frequently, perfectly on beat to every single song regardless of the genre. She clearly loved Kanye as evidenced by the way she way jumping around to Ni**as in Paris. While most people looked drunk and uncoordinated repeating lyrics they shouldn’t be, she looked like she was in her own world, completely lost in the song.
“Shawn… Shawn!” The voice of his best friend Brian drawing him back to the conversation.
“Yup” he answered absentmindedly. “Dude, just go talk to her. You’ve been looking in her direction all night man.”
“Is it that obvious?” he asked sheepishly.
“Yes. Now stop stalling.” And with that, he got up and walked towards her.
By the time he got to her, the song had just ended and she had her back to him. He heard her ask her friends if they wanted to get a drink. He also noticed her friends eyes widen in shock when they noticed that he was standing here, but she was completely oblivious till he tapped her on her shoulder.
He finally managed to get a good look at her when she turned around. The first thing he noticed was her eyes. She had eyes that were clearly very expressive albeit clouded by confusion. He face was framed by black braid that hung down to her waist. While he couldn’t make out more of her facial features he couldn’t help but stare at her lips for a few seconds, he wouldn’t immediately describe someone’s lips as kissable but that was all that came to mind. Her lips were full in a way that could only be natural and they were currently pouted as she looked at him.
“Hi.”
“Umm hi there.” Her voice was husky and he noticed she spoke with a slight accent but he couldn’t place it.
“Feel free to tell me to leave but I was wondering if you wanted to grab a drink?” While he wouldn’t have been surprised if she said no, he was hoping she would say yes.
While she looked a little uncertain, her friends were the opposite, answering for her. “Yes, she does!”
“Umm… yeah, I guess you can?”
“You don’t sound sure. It’s okay if you feel a little uncomfortable. I can go.”
“No, it’s fine. I just need to talk to my friends real quick.”
“I’ll wait at the bar.”
As he walked towards the bar, he couldn’t help but smile. It only took a few minutes but she joined him at the bar.
“Hello again.”
“Hi. What would you like?” He asked trying to sound as calm as possible.
”I’d like to say surprise me but I’m not that confident in your ability to choose drinks” she said with a smirk. And that was when he noticed the dimples in her cheeks. “so I’ll go with a Hennessy and Coke please.”
Shawn ordered a Hennessy and coke for her and a reposado for himself. After the bartender placed both drinks in front of them, he took a sip of his and turned to her.
“So you like Kanye?”
“How’d you know?”
“I saw you when you were dancing to Kanye with your friends earlier.”
“Ahh! Well to answer your question, yes I like Kanye.”
The two talked about their favourite Kanye albums. Shawn telling her that his is Graduation. She told him that hers is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Then the conversation morphed into a debate over which was better, both fiercely defending tier choices with much laughter.
“So I know you like Kanye a lot, but I don’t even know your name.”
“That’s because I haven’t given it to you.” She tilted her head to the side, almost as if she were sizing him up. “My name is T.”
His thoughts stopped dead in their tracks. ‘Her name is Tea? As in T-E-A?’ He thought before it dawned on him ‘No you idiot, she means the letter T.’
“T. As in the letter T?” He asked confusion lacing his words. “Does it stand for something?”
“It does stand for something but I haven’t decided if I’m going to tell you what it means yet.” She said smugly.
“Can I guess?”
“I can guarantee you won’t guess.”
Shawn then began listing every name he could think of that started with T.
“Tiffany”
“Nope”
“Theresa”
“No” she shook her head, braids swaying with the motion.
“Tyra”
“Not even close” she scoffed.
“What about Tiana?”
She chuckled and muttered something under her breath that he couldn’t make out. “I told you, you can’t guess.”
“Will you ever tell me what it stands for?”
“Okay,” she rolled her eyes playfully. “It’s…” she leaned close whispering in his ear “Tolani”
“Tow-lah-ni” he repeated.
She couldn’t keep in the laugh that exploded from her and had her banging on the table. He noticed that her dimples became even more prominent when she laughed. ‘Something to note’ he thought.
“Close enough.”
“It’s a beautiful name but I’m guessing that my pronunciation is off?”
“Way off, but I’ll forgive it. So now you know my name, but I don’t know yours.” She said with a raised eyebrow.
“Something tells me you do.” He replied.
“I do, but I want you to tell me.”
“My name is Shawn.”
“Shawn Mendes.”
“I’m assuming your friends told you?”
“They did. I probably should have known huh?”
“Not necessarily. It’s nice to talk to someone who isn’t completely starstruck even though I don’t mind that.”
“Ah, the pop star that wants to be normal.”
“Something like that.” He shrugged.
The conversation lulled, they both took a sip of their respective drinks.
Before he was able to something she looked behind him and started to leave. “My friends are signalling. I think they’re ready to go.”
“Wait.” He grabbed her arm before she left. “Can I at least get your Instagram or something?”
She hesitated for a second, before asking the bartender for a pen. She scribbled something on the bar napkin and handed it to him. ‘@tolani.a’
“It was really nice to meet you, Shawn.” She said before turning to meet her friends.
Before Shawn left the bar he opened the Instagram app on his phone and searched for her, his thumb hovering over the follow button before tapping it. Then he locked his phone and placed it in his pocket.
